So, the big day is here. You’ve decided to have outpatient surgery at Brigham City Community Hospital. Good for you. You’re in good hands.
Here are some quick instructions for preparing:
- Preregistration and testing are done two to seven days before surgery. Our pre-admitting department will contact you to schedule a preoperative appointment. Bring your Medicare, Medicaid, and/or insurance cards with you. In addition, bring your admitting packet because it contains your physician’s orders, consent form and anesthesia questionnaire. Please fill it out accurately and completely. List ALL medications including herbal remedies and vitamins. You may also be called in advance for preregistration information.
- We will call you with instructions and arrival time the afternoon before your scheduled surgery date. If it is not convenient to wait for our call, you may call us at 435-734-4385 after 2:00 p.m. the day before your surgery.
- Please be prompt on your day of surgery. For your comfort, we suggest wearing loose-fitting clothing that can be easily folded and low heeled shoes. (Distraction break: check out these fabulous high-heeled shoes that you SHOULDN’T wear the day of surgery) You may bring a robe and slippers to wear home. If you are staying overnight, please bring personal care items (i.e., toothbrush, comb, etc.).
- Please leave all valuables at home. Remove all makeup, rings, jewelry, false eyelashes, wigs, and contact lenses. You may wear rings if they are difficult to remove.
- Please refrain from smoking the day of surgery. Do not eat or drink anything (including water, coffee, candy, mints) or chew gum after midnight the night before surgery. If your child is the patient, please watch his/her intake carefully. If anything is taken, your surgery may be canceled because any food or liquid in the patient’s stomach may be dangerous during anesthesia.
- It is necessary to be accompanied by a responsible adult who will be available directly after surgery to stay with you and with whom you will leave. Do not plan any activities the day of surgery. For your safety, do not drive, operate power tools, or make important decisions for at least 24 hours following surgery.
Your Surgery Day
- If for some reason you have not been through the pre-operative admitting process, please report to the Admitting Office if arriving after 8:00 a.m. If arriving before 8:00 a.m., please report to the Emergency Department Admitting Clerk.
- The average stay for outpatient surgery is approximately four hours. A more accurate estimate of your length of stay will be communicated to you at the time of your admission.
- If your child is having surgery, both parents may accompany the child; however, please do not bring other children. Patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Following these instructions will help your surgery go smoothly. Thank you for choosing us for your healthcare and staying close to home.
